Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
July 12, 2003
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The lagoon has been producing some good fish the last few days. Yesterday I had three guys out and we took fourteen reds only one slot fish and the rest of them were big bulls. The largest reds were caught by Steve that day, he took several from forty to forty-five inches. The reds were eating mullet at first but we had a bad hook up to catch ratio so we went to pin fish. Then we were almost 100% with four double hook ups. The week prior to that I was in Panama at the Tropic Star lodge and caught two black marlin over 300#s each and about fourteen Pacific sailfish. I caught one of my marlin on twenty-pound test line and stand up tackle. One of the sailfish I caught on an 8 wt fly rod and reel, the fishes weight was about 115#. I broke the rod and fought the fish for the last ten minutes with one guide and a very short rod. This was the biggest sail of the trip. We also caught about eighteen yellow fin tuna. Back in the lagoon just prior to my Tropic Star trip I had Renee and Chris Trotter out and Chris was looking to catch his first redfish. He caught a forty-three inch fish that was tailing with the school. We took several reds that day including a few slot size fish for dinner.

Fred Bergert was out for a rematch, last year Fred fought a bull red for almost three hours and lost it just prior to the net. This year Fred had a successful bout with the bulls with the first big fish going 43’’. The trout bite can be good at times and anglers fishing with pigfish are having the best results. Fish are coming from many of the flats edges that taper into water that is two to four feet. If you do not hook up in ten minutes or so move to a different spot. The fish are spawning this time of year so release what you do not need. This is a species that gets hammered by a lot of anglers and is not considered by enough conservationists. So take only what you think you need. Jacks and ladyfish are still busting bait and are a lot of fun when you take them on light tackle. Use a 12 Fathom 1/8th ounce jig and work your slam'R in a twitching motion. Remember; Think like a fish to catch fish.
