Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The water has finely come up a little from the extreme lows we have had for the past month. The low water pushes the fish in the pools along the flats but now that the water is back up the fish are spread out across the flats. You can cast the usual plastic bait or spoon to cover a lot of ground or you can sight cast to them. Roy Jeff and Mark Edon did just that, they caught eleven reds to 38 inches in a short period of time. The reds were tailing inside Tiger shoal in a school that housed about a hundred fish. Mullet was the ticket for these reds.
The trout bite can be very good this time of year; pigfish seem to be taking the majority of trout. I have been seeing some tarpon rolling in the Mud aria and in Haulover canal as well as the Indian River. You can toss a mullet at them or a pin fish. The fight is usual over quick but a circle hook will better your odds of landing one. Mangrove snapper are in the channel feeding on small pinfish and pilchards. Anchor up and fish your bait on the bottom. Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
