Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week started with rain and wind but I had two diehards that wanted to go. We headed for the Indian River to pound the banks with finger mullet, pinfish and plastics. Chuck and Betsy braved the wind and rain and took over fifteen fish. Redfish, flounder, trout, mangrove snapper and some jacks were in the mix. Even though the weather was yuck they still caught a lot of fish.
The days followed were smooth and glassy and Chris Deloach fished solo with me in the Mosquito Lagoon. I placed us on a school of redfish that housed at least two hundred fish. At first we tossed a few finger mullet and had instant bites. The fish looked real aggressive so I decided it was a good time to tie on top water plugs. The reds were all over the plug with about every ten rolls was a hook up. We fished them until we caught twenty-four then we went trout fishing. It was nice to see some calm water after last week’s blow. I have been seeing some tarpon on the flats in the Lagoon as well. A well placed bait will get you a hook up if the tarpon decides it is time to eat. We have to remember we are on their clock and only the fish will decide when they want to turn on. The best color for plastics this week was pumpkinseed, just in time for Halloween.
