Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
October 20, 2003
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

This week has been beautiful, the wind was up a few days but it did not slow the fish down. I like a little wind to help bump and drift a flat. That is bump your trolling motor to adjust your boat angle towards your drift, not bump the flat. The fish will be looking at you as you approach them so be quick and ready to cast when you first see your target. This week I had Buck Jones out and a perfect short cast resulted in a 28-inch gator trout. The fanged critter fell for a finger mullet that was only three feet from the bow before he sucked the bait up. Then swam in my tunnel of my boat before Buck could set the hook. I know for many years to come Buck and I will remember what the eyes of that trout looked like when he ate that bait so close to us. I know the photo of the released trout will remind Buck. This fish and many of the others we saw were pushed in the grass and not moving. When they were parked in the grass you had to wake them up before they would eat. But some were swimming looking for food. When we had this situation the fish were all over the plastics we were throwing. Slam”Rs were the best plastic we threw in pumpkinseed and pearl. Buck sight caste to many other respectable reds that day as well. The top water plugging has been good as long as you fish them when you have a favorable moon and barometer. If you are fishing a low you may want to go to something sub surface.

There were some tarpon rolling in the Indian River along some of the bulkheads early in the morning. They were feeding on mullet that were making the journey with the tide. Some of the fish were pretty aggressive exposing almost all of their scales when attacking the bait. The best way to fish them is anchor up and put out the baits. Good luck!
