Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
December 6, 2003
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

John and Margie Gilbert joined me for a half-day and they took ten nice reds and two gator trout that were released very carefully. At one point they had a triple on and had to do some dances with rods as I call it. The next day was a beautiful day and the fishing was awesome as well. Ed Mcleod and son Logan took ten reds to thirty-three inches on light tackle. Mark and Paul took thirteen the next day on mullet. And the Chotas family ended up the weekend with Lee, Will, Carl and Neil taking good numbers of reds. The neat thing about the trip Carl slid over the side of the boat with his fly rod and waded behind a near island lee. Before Carl slipped over the side I pointed two sand patches to try behind the island where we took several reds on bait the day before. Younger brother Will and family caught several fish while we were anchored on the flat as we watched Carl fly cast to the white holes. Then Carl hooked up and landed his first redfish on fly, we quickly eased over and took a few photos of his trophy fish. Carl did a good job being open minded in fly choice, executing a plan and being persistent. GOOD JOB!

Most of our fish we took this week was on mullet, it seemed to work better than any other baits we tried recently. We tried to go out this morning but the crew had me turn back for a reschedule on a warmer day. It was a good move no one likes to be miserable no mater how many fish you are catching. The water temperature has dropped and flounder should be on the move and the sheephead should be at the rocks at Ponce inlet. The water level has been dropping so be careful when you go to run up on your favorite flat in the Lagoon, it may have ten inches less waer than the last time you visited.

Be careful and good luck.
