Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Happy Holidays to all. Now that the winter is totally kicked in the fish have come out of their transition period and into winter mode. The water is cold moving fish a little deeper and slower. We have had a few cool mornings but the days have been very comfortable. For several days we had no wind and you could see tailing reds for a long long way. This past week I had Joelle, Kent and grandson Jonas Miller out for a perfect day of catching. They caught ten redfish ten trout and a flounder, the largest red was twenty-nine + inches. We were using 12 Fathom jigs in the morning and mullet a little later. The trout are bunched up in deep holes and if we wanted to, we could catch dozens of them in each spot. We are taking them on 12 Fathom jigs bounced on the bottom. About one third of the trout we have been taking have been in the slot size. But as you all know trout season is closed and they all need to be put back, at least for a few more days.

The small reds are caught in the same holes with the trout. We have been catching the larger reds in the shallows on shrimp and plastics. The key to being successful in this cold water is working your bait slow. The bait has to move in the same swimming pattern as all the other fish to look natural. If you work your lure to fast you will get fewer strikes. With the water so crystal clear you can see fish in the water for over a hundred-foot on those sunny days. Toss your offering way past the fish and work it SLOW back at them. Some fish are much more aggressive than others. With last weeks freezing temperatures small crabs have dyed and are lying the bottom and are being scar fed buy the redfish.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
