Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

I have been so busy on the water lately that I have not had time to post reports. The wind and the fronts are going to predict what kind of a days fishing you are going to have, oh did I say casting. Yes a good cast is also essential if sight fishing is what you want to do. Pete Archibold fished solo with me and had a banner day. He caught twenty reds and four trout with three fish taken on his fly rod. John Hall fished solo as well last week with me seeking his first red on his fly rod. He did just that with a total of five to add to his trophy list. John was the most persistent fly fisher I have had on my boat; he worked hard for his fish and didn‘t give up. We were in fish all day and John cast all day, my arms were getting tired watching him cast so much. We changed flies I can’t even tell you how many times. Eventually about 10am the school of reds decided they were hungry and ate, I think more moon related than the fly. Good Job John! The reds are schooled up in good numbers and twenty fish days are common at this time. If you want to catch redfish the schools are thick now. Be extremely careful running the flats with the water level being so low.
We have also been taking our share of trout that are on the flats as well. Shrimp finger mullet and my favorite plastic the slam’Rs by 12 Fathom will get you a strike. I like casting the pumpkinseed and the chartreuse slam’Rs way ahead of our drift. Do not drift past the white sand spots with out casting to them. These fish are hunkering down and waiting for something to go by to eat, so why not give it to them.
Remember, Think like a fish to catch fish.
