Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wow what a week it has been, giant reds, giant black drum and world records. We have broke three more black drum world records this month making that a total of ten black drum records caught on my boat. Raleigh Werking and I teamed up and took two drum fish on Stren six-pound test. The first record of the season was a 73 # fish and the next record was a 75 # drum. Raleigh is always in pursuit of record fish and he and I (The Dream Team) have broke nine records together. Courtney Gerken age fourteen wanted to catch a jr. woman's world record and she did just that. She needed a fish over fifty eight pounds and she got her wish with a 63 # Drum. I am not sure but I think the fish weighed more than she does. Courtney played the fish very well while dad Bret did battle with a fish over 90 #. Several times Courtney’s fish made passes towards the anchor line. I uncleated the line and lifted it high while her fish passed under the bow. After a twenty minute or so battle Courtney’s fish came boat side with the white flag. You go girl!
The first giant drum fishing trip of the season was with an expert angler from California David Gong. He had a goal to catch one of these monster drum to add to his list of game fish accomplishments. The first night fishing he took five drum with one tipping the scales at 80 #s. This is the most monster black drum we have taken in one night. We would have taken several more if we did not spend an hour walking a fish that needed extra walking. Prior to David’s trip to Florida he inquired about the rod specifications that would be needed to do this type of fishing. David built four rods that were perfect for giant black drum fishing. The rods were so perfect that he built, that he built me a set just like his. David also got to experience some flats fishing for redfish on his trip to Florida. Good job David. On the flats we are taking reds, trout, flounder, jacks and ladyfish. Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
