Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
June 2, 2004
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wow what a month May was, with the exception for a few days that were out of my control. Reds, trout, snook, flounder, mangrove snapper, black drum, jacks and ladyfish were the species we took last month. This month will yield the same with a few more species on the list, one being tarpon.

Greg and Jaye Elliot joined me for a morning of catching. They caught slot size redfish early, only a warm up for the next event. Off to the giant reds we went, they took five bulls with the largest going thirty pounds. Our total for the morning was twenty-three reds almost all were sight caste to. Chris Dayton fishing solo had a similar day to that one with several bulls and many slot size fish. If it is reds or trout you would like to catch this is a good time to go before the heat really kicks in. The fishing if going off now, meaning good.

FYI One thing I can tell you that will help is fish slow, don’t pole the fish to death. Chasing them poling or with a trolling motor will only push the fish to hysteria. Chill out and do unto other anglers as you would want them to do to you. Don’t run between the bar or flat that some angler or guide is fishing, give them a wide birth. Run behind someone (at a distance) not to disturb what they are intending to fish. And you poling don’t apply for the Jesus Christ job it’s already been taken. Instead give an indication to what side you would prefer someone to run around you on. With two arms out, who knows which way you want them to go. There is more traffic out in the Mosquito Lagoon than ever before. It is a dangerous place for boaters and anglers to run unless you know your way around. Hire a guide (who really knows the aria) to show you the dangerous things to look out for in the lagoon. Don’t spend thirty five thousand dollars on a flats boat and run it across six inches of water because the sails man told you it could. Explore and learn the aria before running aimlessly across the lagoon. Another thing if your boat is not moving forward and you a shooting a rooster tail of mud you need to turn around and go the way you came in. Not with the motor get out the pole or push, no worries no sharks in four inches of water. Killing vegetation in the National Park is a violation of the law and you could be fined destroying grass beds. But the fine is not the reason you should not destroy the grass beds, you are destroying some ones home and crib.

Good luck and be careful.
