Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

As the summer months wind down the crowd of anglers on the flats in the lagoon lesson. For a past few months a lot of the other guides have been chasing trout on the edges of the flats anchoring up and using pigfish for bait.
I have been fishing pigs periodically but for the most part I have been catching reds on the flats. While the other anglers are trout fishing it leaves many quiet flats to fish without a lot of traffic. On the falling tide all the reds have been tailing hard while the moon was rite. In the real shallow stuff you have to drop your offering in front of the fishes nose. That is when they are in the grass of course and the tail is up. The reds feeding habit always changes on the full like we have now. You will notice your perfectly placed shrimp getting turned down on occasions. I like a week before the full myself especially when you have overcast nights. It is a wonder we catch anything with all the bait in the water, and not just the ones you see on the surface. It is amazing how many little pigfish and sailors choice you can see in the grass. As you drift along a flat look ahead of your drift in a white sand patch and you will see thousands going through it. On a full moon a red or trout can just wait on a sand patch edge and ambush bait all night. In this case sometimes it is worth waiting a little later in the day to fish providing you do not have the thunderstorms around.
Tarpon are in full swing in the river and jetties, toss a mullet or crab at them. Mangrove snapper are feeding on the outgoing tides and on the big moon. Small sailors choice or pilchards should do the trick, but let them eat it. The flounder have been giving us a mixed bag here and there. If you want trout (a lot of trout) use pigfish. Good luck and stay away from that lightning.
