Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today was one of those perfect days when every place you fished you caught fish even if the tide was not perfect and the water was dirty. I fished a little north of Oak Hill today and took some really nice trout and two respectful snook. I caught some jack in the river as well, they were about five pounds. They are by catch most of the time but this weekend they will complete your slam in the tournament. I took all of the fish I caught on pigfish only because that is what I was using. Other baits would have done the trick including finger mullet and pilchards. I also took redfish today on pigs. I could see them cruising the rocks and shoreline along the ICW. Unlike lagoon reds you could drift with them as they made their way down the bank. As I was pitching pigs to docks and rocks I was looking at the bottom and noticed mud. I followed it till I saw the cruising reds pushing bait fifty feet ahead of my drift. They were fining and tailing as they maid way. Yesterday we fished the lagoon and did well with the reds. They were fining as they maid their way across the shallow windless flat. My client Jeff pitched shrimp at who knows how many reds and landed fish to 38’’ on stradic 2000s.
If it is tarpon you are looking for they are rolling along the ICW and you can find them in a few places in the lagoon. I watched one crash mullet just of tiger shoal while I was redfish fishing this week. The jetties will hold tarpon all summer and that is where you probably have the best shot at catching one. Live mullet trolled along the beach will do the trick as well. I like fishing a stinger rig for kings and catch the tarpon in between bites. Jacks kings and sharks will invade your baits as well; when you slow troll live mullet or pogies. Use twelve to twenty pound test so you can turn the occasional 100 pound + fish. Good luck and be care full.
