Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wow what a mess it has been in Florida for the past month and not just for the shores. The waters are covering numerous amounts of debris just under the surface. Some arias that you run through may now have a stump in its path so take note. We have lost a few fish because of the new debris in the water. Three days a go I fished the docks in the Indian River and landed seven snook to twenty-five inches. A few jacks, mangrove snapper, and ladyfish mixed the bag up a little. I saw a few tarpon roll while casting to the docks on the outgoing tide. I pitched a few baits at them but no takers. Today we went to the same spot but the run off from the swamp has turned the water in the river to a coffee dark color.

We have been taking a few reds on the flats in the lagoon with a few black drum in the mix. We have been using shrimp for the drum. The reds have been eating finger mullet, shrimp and plastics. The only thing is you have to make a perfect cast. Not only perfect, you need to do it fast because a lot of your shots will come close to the boat. Due to a little wind we have hade here lately the water has been stured up. Every day the clarity has been getting better, with the exception of the river on the west side. I have found fish in the dirty water they are just harder to see. We fished Edgewater a few days ago and caught reds working the banks chowing on fiddler crabs. What a site it is when they spank a crab off a mangrove shoot and suck it down. A few times the red was on his side doing the one fin flop as he made his way along the shallow shore. I was fishing the leeward shoreline so I could see the fish moving. Be careful!
