Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Indian River is looking a lot cleaner these days making the waters along the west bank quite inviting. Last week on a pre fish day I took jacks, ladyfish trout, reds and a black drum. I saw a few tarpon but not many. The lagoon held more tarpon this summer than I have seen in a long time. The real treat was they were up on the flats because of all the high water we have had. Tiger shoal’s waters are so high it is a little harder to see the reds. I have been venturing to waters that didn’t exist before the storms. Reds are pushing up to feed on the fiddlers that march on the grass. You can also find singles and smaller schools through out the lagoon. But I must say the lagoon is not quite the lagoon pre storms. Steve Duval and Alison joined me for a half-day and they took seven nice reds. This was Alison’s first red fish trip, I think she is hooked. The trip before this one we caught fourteen reds all in the slot size. I have seen more trout up on the flats this week than in past months. Part due to the trout spon that was taking place for the past few months. Now they are up to replenish what they lost and fatten up for the winter.
A little further north at Ponce Inlet black drum have been at the south rocks. Fish outgoing tide with shrimp and you will catch reds along with the drum. You may even take some whiting and a few pompano. Snook can be had at the docks and bridges as well at the north rocks at the inlet. Use a pig fish, finger mullet (ok 9”) or a big shrimp to catch the line sidders. I have not been fishing the river as much for snook because the water was a little yuck for a month. Now that it has cleared I will spend more time in it this week. Be careful!
