Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
January 15, 2005
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

We exited last year with a bang having Gary Ringer out for a morning of catching. It wasn’t ten minutes into our trip and Gary had already landed two reds. He finished out the day with twenty-five. Then we had similar action bringing in the New Year. Bill, Pat Griggs and Danny fished two days and produced twenty plus reds each day. They also took many trout that were respectable fish. Then Pat pulls out the bananas; I said captains only use bananas as excuses in desperate times. LOL

The trout bite has been good, in fact I caught a trout on a banana strip once thinking back now. The fish are up on the flats confused about what time of the year it really is. It has been so nice in east central Florida compared to last month when the water temp was 51degrees. The trout have been eating Xtract'R in copper or red and gold. We have been taking most of them on shrimp because that is what we have been using most. The reds are eating the same. When the water chills again and it will, slow that retrieve way down. I have to talk to myself to fish slow enough. This weekend is keeping me land locked because of the nasty weather we will have all weekend. Then things will get back to normal as usual. There are still a few flounder around but not like last month. The cold snap this weekend will change that.
