Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

In the Mosquito Lagoon the fishing has been awesome. We have been jigging for trout in about four feet of water. The bait of choice has been Berkley Power bait. You will catch more fish using them if you are working them correctly. Slowly bounce them on the bottom in holes or around structure. A few days ago we caught seventy trout and five reds using this method. The reds fell for the Gulp shrimp worked them the same way. Today we took reds on Gulp crabs.

Schools of finger mullet are moving through the Lagoon and I am sure the jacks and ladyfish are not far behind. Black drum are hugging the rocks that line the channel edges. Use a shrimp with a sliding sinker and be patent. These drum are quite tasty but the big ones are full of worms. I never kill the big ones because they will lay about a million eggs in one season. This will insure that our grand children will have plenty of drum for years to come. The sheepshead are sharing rocks with the drum and you can take these bandits on shrimp or oyster crabs. Make sure when you are collecting your crabs there are no stoners in with them. There are size limits on stone crabs and you do not want to get pinched with a big fine. Actually you can’t even have whole stone crabs just their claws. Water levels have come back up this week spreading the fish out and opening the playing field. Be safe and think like a fish to catch fish.
