Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
April 11, 2005
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Lagoon is not always perfect buy you always can catch fish. Well some can, knowing the fish better than the back of your hand is always a plus. The biggest adversity is weather and low pressure, that can surely shut the bite down. This past week I had Jaye and Greg Elliott down for two days and they always seem to bring the big bite. Jaye’s first fish was an over the slot red followed up by a gator trout moments later. They took a dozen more reds and nine more trout that day and the next day was about the same. Not everyday is like this though like I said low pressure and other conditions can shot the bite down. That is when you have to pull out all the tricks of the trade. Can you say GULP, that will help you. Berkley’s Gulp baits definitely help me when it gets tough. I have used Power Baits in the past and they work great. But now that there is Gulp I lean towards them in a tough situation or if I just want to catch a lot of fish. They have helped me in my tournament fishing and I will never leave the dock with out them. They taste so real Loveday Bait and Tackle Store in New Smyrna has to stock them on the highest shelf because the cats eat them. I still use the Berkley Power Bait as well especially when the bit is on. The Power Bait’s are tougher and a little more durable. I use these when I am catching alot of fish in a concentrated aria or making a lot of cast locating fish. The Jerk Shad has a nice darting action that imitates a wounded fish that the gamesters have trouble ignoring.

Trout are located all over the flats and we have taken plenty of them on this bait this week. We also took some black drum on the Gulp 2’’ Peeler Crab this past week. Like I said if you’re not Gulping your not grinning. Keep some of these in your box just in case. Better yet use them, but only if you want to catch fish. Snook are starting to make there way back to all the usual locations now that the water temp is rising. I even saw some pompano on the flats this weekend. I think this will be a more common sight since they do not allow netting anymore. One more thing if you are one of the many #^%&*@ that I saw plow your boat into the flats this week. GET A CHART and learn the aria before you crank across the flats. Not only for the protection of the grass flats but for your buddy sitting next to you as well.
