Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
May 8, 2005
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Every day this week was good except the day the front came through. Even then the day was not a total loss, Kimberly Deloach took an eight-pound trout on a Berkley Power Bait jerk shad. Chris and her also took several nice reds on the same baits. Don Van Dingenen and friend Carl caught caught four nice trout and many beautiful reds using Berkley Gulp shrimp and minnow worms. Cherry and pumpkinseed did the trick but it seemed the sent meant more to the fish than the color. We were fishing in about a foot or two of water. If you have not tried the Gulp baits you don’t know what you are missing. I am a believer and depend on them in many situations. I rig my Gulp baits with a non-weighted hook when I am fishing shallow.

When I am fishing three to five foot of water I use an 8th-ounce jig head. We have been taking many trout this way along the many clinker islands in the lagoon. Along with the trout you will catch jacks ladyfish sheepshead mangrove snapper redfish and flounder. These are the species we have taken in the last week. Many of the trout we have taken were gators this week. New penny and pearl with a black back in the jerk shad seem to do the trick in the deeper water. The new penny Gulp shrimp fished the same way was also worked great. Travis and brother Troy Boutwell fished the deep water with me this way. Considering

the nasty weather we had they

caught many fish this way. Good job guys play hooky more often. Find the many schools of finger mullet in the lagoon and you should be in the fish. Think like a fish to catch fish.
