Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
June 2, 2005
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon has been flooded with bait. Following them are a number of species. You will find trout, redfish, jacks, ladyfish, flounder, and an occasional mangrove snapper. These are the species that clients have taken last week. Find the bait schools and make some cast, watch the bait move and they will tell you where the fish are.

Most of the fish were taken on Berkley power bait jerk shad’s. The two colors I use the most in the lagoon are new penny and white with a black back. We have been fishing the flats edges in about two to five feet of water bouncing the jerk shad’s of the bottom. I use Stren Super Braid on my reels. Four pound diameter with a fourteen pound rating. The Super Braid allows you to feel every thing, what bottom structure you are on and even the lightest bites. The reels I use are the Abu Garcia 772 models that are light and tough. One of the reasons I use them they are so light. One more good reason is they cost almost half the price you will pay for your Stradics. Team them up with a Fenwick rod and you have a nice balanced outfit you can cast all day.

There are a few black drum roaming the flats as well. Use a Gulp shrimp with a 2/0 hook and you should be set. Cast well ahead of your fish so the bait can sink down in front of them. Haulover canal has a number of fish in it including the drum. Snook along with all the other species I mentioned should be roaming the canal. The waters are getting crowded out there so try to be courteous. You will run into an idiot every once in a while so try to keep your cool. Think like a fish to catch fish!
