Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
The reds have been tailing and crashing bait on all the lagoon flats. We have been pitching gulp shrimp and other gulp patterns at them. I have not seen so many reds in quite some time. The water is super low and finding the fish has never been so easy. Jacks and ladyfish have been crashing bait and we have taken a few while fishing for trout. Every now and again you will catch a flounder or two in the same aria. We have also been targeting the big reds that have been easy targets when you can get to them. We have been taking plenty of them on mullet and cut ladyfish. Tarpon are here and their but I have not fisher them in the lagoon. Your best bet is at Ponce and just outside the jetties. Mullet and pogies has been the bait of choice for the silver kings.
Trout have been feeding on pigfish and mullet on the live bait side. On the artificial side they have been eating Berkley jerk shads. I like using the new penny and pearl with a black back. I like using a one-quarter ounce jig head when I am fishing two to five foot of water. Bounce your jig off the bottom to create a little mud and noise. When I am fishing shallower I go with a kahile hook. With just a hook twitch hard and release the pressure off the line to create a darting action. If you want to really increase your hook up ratio go with Stren Super Braid line with zero stretch. Remember think like a fish to catch fish.
