Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
September 18, 2005
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The month started a little slow due to Ophelia sitting off the coast and blowing us for seven days. We managed to fish one day that week in the wind with some quick spurts of rain. Even though the weather was not in our favor Tom Bailey daughter Wendy and friend Dianne managed to catch some nice reds and trout. This was Wendy and Dianne’s first redfish catching trip. They caught all their fish on Berkley Gulp minnow worms in cherry seed and Gulp shrimp in new penny colors. We covered the flats in about one point five to two foot of water. Covered meaning fan casting while we drifted sideways with the wind. If we could see the white sand patches we would work them, but the water was dirty making it difficult to see anything. They worked the flats hard and their efforts surely payed off.

The weather cleared up the next week and things were back to normal. I put together a five-boat trip and all the boats caught trout. Jim Miller fished the last fifteen minutes for reds and managed to catch one and see a few more. Jim said next time he wants to spend more time fishing for redfish because they fight so much better. We also caught jack and ladyfish. That day we were using pigfish when we were trout fishing. Jim caught about thirty- five or so. We switched to cherry seed minnow worms in the seven-inch length when we fished for reds. The water has shot up about a foot and a half in the past few weeks spreading the fish out. You may have to cover a lot of ground before you find reds on the flats. Yesterday we caught some really nice ones at the end of our day. The moon was a factor in our early bite and then around noon they turned on. Hay good fishing, and remember think like a fish to catch fish
