Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Lagoon has been good even if the weather has not (rain rain go away). We toughed it out a few days this past week and still caught plenty of fish on our Gulp baits. If you have not tried Gulp you are missing out. I have tried many colors in the Mosquito Lagoon and narrowed it down to a few of my favorites. But one must remember season and conditions change and so must your color. The 5’’ cherryseed and pearl sinking minnow is a good bait for making long cast and working the waters in a deeper fashion. That is because the sinking minnow is sleek and dense and has no resistance gliding through the water. If you want to slow your retrieve down a little go to a minnow worm, it’s ribbed tail will help you achieve this. When working these baits use a 1/4-oz jig for water over three-foot and when working in the shallows go with a wide gap hook. Rig your shallow Gulp with the hook just 1/4-inch from the front of your Gulp and bring it all the way through the bait. Your Gulp with a jig should be laced on as you normal did with the old regular plastics. My other favorite (go too bait) is the Gulp shrimp, hands down new penny is my choice. Rig this just as I explained the minnow worm and you are on your way to success.
Seth and Austin Bloom (father &son) fished one of those iffy days and managed to catch some over slot and keeper size reds. We fished the Gulp shrimp and basically still fished them. Austin’s arms were aching in the first few hours. Hay take your kid fishing even if you are not an avid angler it will direct their minds to nature. Too many kids are into game boys and videos. Pat Griggs and brother-in-law Danny slapped the fish silly with their expert fishing techniques. Give them the Gulp place them on the bow and set them on autopilot. Pat’s other brother-in-law Joe and Danny joined me for another day and they spanked them as well. Over thirty trout a hand full of redfish and a few by catch species made for a great day. The Griggs family has been fishing with me for years and it is always a joy putting them on fish. I remember Pat catching a grand slam with me (tarpon ,trout, redfish and snook) in the lagoon. The lagoon has also been housing jacks that have been taking advantage of the abundance of finger mullet. Hiram McLeod was fighting a jack the other day and a redfish attacked the Power bait that slid up the line. Soon you will see flounder making there way up the inner coastal. Remember; Think like a fish to catch fish.
