Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well the season is definitely racing into summer, bait pods showering in the Mosquito Lagoon. Pin and pigfish peppering any white hole in the Lagoon now giving the reds and trout plenty to forage on. Today was the only day I used finger mullet in the last nine months on my charters. One guy was tossing Gulp out front while we fished three rods off the port with finger mullet. By nine o'clock we pulled the mullet off and went with the Gulp. The one angler out fished the other rods with live bait. Seems like they were in the mood fore some 5’’ Gulp sinking minnow in chartreuse today so that is what they got. We caught about nine reds and the same amount of trout today. I find with casting Gulp as you drift the flats you cover so much ground. When you find fish Power Pole down and fish the aria thoroughly. Chances are you will find a few more there. Power Pole for you that are not familiar with this devise it is a shallow water anchoring device that allows you to deploy the unit from any where in the boat. A small remote with two buttons on it controls the up and down function.
Trout and reds are eating the jerk style baits when they are aggressive and I switch over to a shrimp or crab style when they are feeding sluggish. The jacks are crashing into the big schools of finger mullet and we have been taking a few swings at them in passing. Cast a 4’’ Minnow Grub style Gulp in white in front of the school and just wind fast. These are fun fish to watch badminton the finger mullet in the air, pop, pop, back and forth then gone. If you really want to have fun take your Frenzy Walker and take the hook off and watch the top water plug fly. This is also a way to control the direction of the school. Cast past the school with the top water and wind it fast and have your anglers ready to pitch Gulp at them. Remember if you’re not Gulpin your not grinnin.
