Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon these past few weeks have been off the charts. Limits of trout and redfish have been a common daily sight. Speaking of sight we have been spending most of our days sight fishing for oversize reds. Most of the fish are between thirty-five inches up to forty six inches and a few even bigger every once in a while. We have been seeing a few tarpon rolling while targeting these brutes and if you are in range take the shot. Nothing like spicing up the day with a jumped tarpon in the mix. Trout fishing has been excellent, most anglers target trout with live pigfish and it is a kicker for quick action. But if you are somewhat of a purest. Then you should use a Berkley Gulp chartreuse pepper sinking minnow and twitch the life out of it. You will not believe the trout that will slam this bait. Another bait that has been producing some nice trout and reds as well is the Frenzy Walker in the firetiger color.
Other species that have been roaming the lagoon are mangrove snapper along the channel edges. Lady fish and jacks can be found on the edges of Tiger Shoal and Georges Bar on the deep side. Snook are in the ICW at many of the local docks and bulkheads. Tide will be the factor at what time to fish for them so plan your trip accordingly. Piggy in the structure will get you a bite if the fish are home. You better have some 30 # Super Braid spooled on your reel so you can turn that big linesider. Barnacled incrusted dock supports do not take kindly to mono so braid or get frayed. A quick photo is always better than, remember the one that got away. Be safe on the Lagoon. Last time you were out there may have been some water over your favorite flat, but today is a different tail.
