Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
October 24, 2006
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

I am just getting back in town from fishing the FLW Redfish series championship in Pensacola Fl. I was away for twelve days and it is good to be home. Here the weather has been pleasant with temperatures ranging from sixty in the morning and the afternoon’s highs were around eighty. Today it dropped to forty-five and the high will be about sixty-five. The reds in the Mosquito lagoon have been working the massive finger mullet schools on the flats. The mullet are bunched up and heading north for the inlet. This morning the wind was strong but the trout bite was on. I tossed Berkley Frenzy walkers at the popping trout. Flounder are moving with this cold snap as well. I caught two nice flounder on Gulp shrimp rigged on a 1/4 oz jig head. Bounce the jig on the bottom and fan cast ahead of your drift. New penny is one of my favorite colors for many species of fish.

Jacks and ladyfish are out in a little deeper water feeding on the same. Black drum can be caught around the bridges and docks along with some mangrove snapper in the mix. The drum can be caught on shrimp and small crabs. With a few more cold snaps you should see some sheepshead showing up in good numbers. Crabs are the best bait to take the jailbirds. Fish the tip of the rocks at Ponce if you are into that type of fishing. A few tarpon can be seen rolling at the inlet at the north end of the Indian River and can be tempted with a medium size mullet free lined around the rocks. The tarpon I saw this morning looked as if they were heading for the coast for the southerly run. You can also catch reds in good numbers around the rocks this month. Large reds are feeding on mullet and you can catch them on a five inch Berkley Power Mullet. Instead of getting wet throwing a net. Work the Power mullet close to the bottom and hang on, these fish are big.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
