Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
December 16, 2006
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Now that the weather has been more like winter the fish are swimming for the depths. Mostly trout I should say. This time of the year is one of the best times to catch trout and redfish in the numbers. The fish will be bunched up in holes looking for the temperature to be just a few degrees warmer. I must say I have put anglers in quick action on these cold winter days. With some days catching over a hundred fish. I like to use the pogy in the three-inch size in a variety of colors. I like to fish with the Gulp Pogy in the herring color the most. I rig it with the one-eighth ounce jig head and bounce it off the bottom. Trout season in our aria does not open until January first. Don’t touch your trout when releasing them it wipes their protective slime off. Instead use a hook remover and just roll the hook out. On your jig heads you can pinch down the barb for less damage as well.

The reds have been happy on the flats with waving tails on the major feeds. They were bunched up tight last week and then the water warmed up a tad and spread the field a little. The reds have been pushing up nicely along the edges of the flats on the rising tide. The water level has been extremely low so be careful when running at speed. Fish them slow and don’t push them because that will only tighten their lips. Gulp chartreuse pepper sinking minnow and Johnson spoons have been working well. We have been taking a few flounder (up to six pounds) as well in the mix.

The Ponce jetties have been giving up some flounder as well. Sheepshead and a few black drum are also being caught on the rocks. Small crabs and shrimp should do the trick.

Remember, Think like a fish to catch fish!
