Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Reds are bunched nicely with plenty of fish to be had. Large reds are in full swing for the trophy hunter as well. Trout were abundant my last trip but they were on the smaller side. Black drum, sheepshead and a flounder or two may be caught along the inner coastal waterway. Reds are feeding on almost anything one day, the next may be a challenging. That mood swing from the fish wills all change with the weather jumping to spring. No more cold fronts and sunny skies will warm the flats making them more fish friendly. Snook can be caught by the rocks and docks along with a few flounder.
Well the water was up around the full moon then the bottom came up again. Make sure you know you have plenty of water when you run to and from your fishing ground. We do not have tide changes like Jacksonville, in an hour you have a foot of water come in. I have one of those boats that will run shallower than it will float in. If you do not know the water better than the back of your hand use the more frequented travel known zones. I heard of a few people that have run aground in a Day-5 tunnel hull but I also heard it wasn’t pretty trying to get them out either. I have never seen one stuck and never want to. Some miscoseptions out there for the un-informed non-understanding of the louder exhaust noise. That is when the motor is compleatly jacked up ( on a jack plate) and the prop. running literally out of the water. Far from the bottom or the grass flat that the tunnel is running over. If you haven't experienced it you don’t understand it. But don’t think cavitations from the prop is oysters flying in the air, OR when I pull the throttle back on one it is not running a ground. Ever run your motor on a fresh water flusher? When I shut down on a flat I try to get the motor five to seven inches above the bottom of the boat so when we set down the skeg or prop. does not plunge into the grass. The thing that is really hard is running a mono hull boat after running a tunnel hull for so many years. I think they are much more environmental friendly than any mono hull craft on the water. I am not trying to sell you one because no one makes a day-5 anymore. Be careful be smart and don’t try to follow me because I can’t stop (in four inches of water) to help you.
