Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
March 31, 2007
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Mosquito lagoon has been extremely low these past few days making travel for most a problem. With the drop in the water means fish concentrations in pools and sloughs with sight casting opportunities unparallel. If you are using shrimp or cut bait for redfish, use a circle hook so you can release your fish unharmed. I have been using them more and more and on the over slot fish that is all we use. The hook up ratio is great after you get past the old set the hook mistake. I guarantee you will miss a few that way but once you get use to just winding you will be hooked. Like I was saying the fish have been bunched up eating artificials such as Gulp of corse in shrimp patterns and other shapes as well. Shrimp and finger mullet will do the trick if you want to spend your day in the well all day. I don’t mind on charters I get more exercise this way. But it takes my eyes off the water for a minute and that means I am not looking for fish. I am hooking bait on. With Gulp Shrimp you can blind cast the crab out of them and they stay on pretty good, as long as you are not trying to cast to the next county. We fished over slot reds most of the week and we took big ones everyday this week. I like the four inch Gulp poggy hooked on my circle hook. It has been doing the trick.

Trout, tripletail, mangrove snapper and black drum were all caught this week on my boat. Jacks and ladyfish are around as well. We caught many trout over two pounds up to seven pounds this week. The Gulp 7” Minnow worm rigged weed less with a weighted hook or worm lead was what we caught most of our fish on. Fan cast ahead of your drift and cover the water ahead of you. Every now and again toss a Johnson silver minnow spoon and see if you can get them lit up, if the settle approach does not work for you. The jetties at Ponce have been giving up it’s share of black drum and sheeps head. Blue fish and jacks will jump on your line for sure at the rocks.
