Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon has been good to fair. We have been spending most of our days fishing over slot reds. If you have spent any time fishing these big fish you know they don’t get that big from being drumb, LOL. We have been taking some in the 35 to 45 inch class fish. I only fish circle hooks when I fish these big fish though. I think we all need to go to circle hooks when we use a piece of bait on the bottom. The hook up ratio is great as long as you don’t strike the fish. The hook almost always finds it’s way to the corner of the mouth. I even fish my Gulp bait’s with them but you have to remember not to strike. Danae and Cory Ratchford were 100% on catch and hook up ratio with them and took seven huge reds a few days ago.
Trout fishing has been good to off, depending on if the shrimp have been running all night or not. You can catch trout in the river in the am when the tide is going out. You will see the birds diving on shrimp that are brought up to the surface buy the fish. Jacks and ladyfish will also be escorting the swarms of shrimp that have been dumping out for the past two weeks. We pitched Gulp on 1/8th oz. jig heads where we saw the shrimp skipping the surface and bam it didn’t take long. Did I mention that ladyfish make good redfish bait. Just cut cubes, chunks, steaks that sounds good and pitch them at the big reds. That’s what we did!
