Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

If you want to target trout this time of the year use pigfish for bait. Then still there is no guarantee that you will catch a gator trout. We had a low pressure over us the other day and it shut things down most of the morning. I had Lanny and Kevin the futzer out that day and the trout bite was slow until they tossed Gulp shrimp on the shallow flats. Kevin opened up the can of whoop as- on Lanny the end of the day but paybacks are a beatch. The next day I had Steve Hosphelder and his 11-year-old son Charlie out. Charlie’s caught his first redfish ever and managed to yank a couple over size reds out of the pond as well. Charlie even caught a black drum for the memory bank. Trips with father and son are the most memorable, I think for everyone.
Ladyfish and jacks are pushing finger mullet schools through out the lagoon. Toss a Gulp pogy in pearl or a similar color and work it through the schools of bait. You might want to save one of those ladyfish to chunk if you are into that sort of thing.
Reds are tailing on the flats and are easily caught with a nice presentation. Toss a Gulp shrimp or crab in natural or molting color and you should hook up. If you have to use bait there is no shortage of it.
Coming up on this full moon we will have a slower daytime bite when the skies are clear. That is a good time to take advantage of the coolness of the night and target a few species that have a problem sleeping during the big moon. Snook can be caught around the bridges in the north Indian River on finger mullet and jigging on the bottom. You will see tarpon in the same location rolling in the shadows of the light at night. Ladyfish make a good offering to these silver kings but a mullet will work just as well. For guaranteed flats fishing trips call me at 386 314 5656
