Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli

Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

In the Indian River and Lagoon fishing has been pretty consistent. Reds are really happy these days tail waving giving us a real advantage when thinking out our next cast. School management is the real key too being able to fish a school most of your day. I have seen so many anglers trash a school of redfish by just casting on top of fish. I teach my clients what to do if they see the Gulp rocketing towards the school of reds. If you aboard the cast you will get another shot, but if you splash offerings on top of fish they will freak! To what level, that depends on how many times you do this. Pace yourself with the schools attitude and let them get in that comfort zone before you take your next shot. Try not to pull line over the fishes back on your retrieve. A perfect cast is only perfect when you can add it to your bite to catch ratio. Chris Lucier took near twenty redfish and a few trout that were nice enough to show their teeth before release. His casting placement was key to catching many fish. A speckled escort is usually on the edge of each redfish school AKA Gator trout. So don’t be surprised when you get that signature headshake water frothing barking at the surface action on your line. OK you can be surprised of the size of these trout. Trout season will open soon and these fish will be even more abundant.

Back to school management, when the fish get jumpy and you have to make a decision. Move on or pound these fish to death? Not even a question. When we got to our next spot evaluate the first fish you see and get in his grove. Go down the list is he rooting on the bottom, cruising, or just chillin in a sand hole? The reds on the first flat wanted your Gulp bait moving, and on this flat they may want it sitting still on a platter. Let the fish predict your retrieve speed or stick fishing method. The first fish on this flat we saw Chris pitched a bait only a few feet from us and let it sit until the redfish came through the clump of grass. On command and like a cat on a mouse the red pounced it like a trained pro. A twitch of the rod tip induced this fish to bite. This is one reason I do what I do, to see the facial expressions on the angler’s face watching all this unfold only six feet from the bow. Close encounters with redfish like this are always stored in the memory bank. Everything has to go perfect. And on this day everything went close to it.
