Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon lately has been good for trout, redfish, black drum and a flounder here and there. Since trout season just opened we have been taking our share. We have been bouncing Gulp shrimp rigged on 1/4 oz jigs. New Penny and natural seem to be the color of choice. The key is to work your Gulp bait slow on the bottom. If you work it to fast you will not get the bites you should.
The reds are feeding real well between the cold fronts and they shut down when the barometer is on the low side. Time your fishing accordingly and you will succeed when others are struggling. I had Kevin and Lanny Henricks out and they caught about ten nice redfish and several keeper size trout. The reds were plentiful but they were picky at best. Some days you just have to force feed them. Kevin stuck with top water plugs all day and got many strikes and several really nice redfish. Most of the redfish are focusing on the bottom with the shrimp and poppers burrowed in the sand.
The Ponce jetties have been giving up some flounder as well as Sheepshead and a few black drum near the rocks. Small crabs and shrimp should do the trick. But if you are a Gulpster like me, use a Gulp peeler crab in the natural color.
