Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

The tarpon are slowly making there way down the beach and through Ponce Inlet. They are showing up in the usual spots along the north Indian River. The outgoing tide seems to be the time you see them rolling the most. Toss a blue crab, finger mullet or 12 fathom 4’’ shad in chartreuse tiger at them ahead of their roll. The ladyfish are so thick it is hard to keep bait away from them. Jacks are also in the river crashing into schools of finger mullet and pilchards.
Another species that should be in full swing is mangrove snapper, look for them along the edges of the channel.
This type of fishing requires you to anchor up and fish on the bottom. Use a bait finder rig with a 1/0 hook; use a pilchard or small pin or pigfish for bait. Give them time sometimes it takes five minutes between bites.
The Mosquito Lagoon is still producing some large trout, fish with pigfish on the edges of the flats and around the clinkers. Several of our trips this week took gator size trout, try to release these brood fish. Reds are eating the finger mullet and plastics on the flats and the big reds are a little deeper. Jacks, ladyfish and pompano are other species you may encounter in the goon.
Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
