Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report
The Mosquito Lagoon has been red hot this past week with the tails of reds waving like flags on the forth. Yesterday we watched twenty to fifty tails waving at once as the school of three hundred plus pushed on to the flat. Watching schools like this is a real education only if you sit patiently and wait for the fish to work the flat. If you pole over and push them they will certainly push and maybe go of the edge. If you see there pattern and get ahead of them you can pick fish from the edges and the school is more apt to stay.
Before we hit the schools of reds yesterday we fished for trout with the first fish of the day being a seven and a half-pound trout. William Copland also took two gators a 7# and 5# trout on top water plug with a total of nine fish. Ken Holt took an 8# and a 5# trout also this week with our half day ending with twenty fish. We have been taking our share or should I say releasing our share of gator trout.
The Indian River is still giving up it’s share of snook we caught three from 12# to 14 # this week. They ate finger mullet by Ponce Inlet. There are a lot of tarpon in the river now feeding on finger mullet and what ever flows by. We hooked three this week but did not land any of them. One green fish jumped seven feet from the boat giving client Betsy Swiser a heart stopping moment. He was around 80# and the other two were 125 to 140#. Jacks ladyfish and mangrove snapper are other options in the river now. Early morning fishing is your best bet due to all the afternoon thunderstorms. Be careful.
