Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

This has been the coolest August we have had in a long time. The winds are the contributing factor, with a steady breeze out of the west all morning then rotating from the east by noon. The fishing has been as pleasant as the weather. The reds are tailing on the flats in the Mosquito Lagoon in the a.m. then they shut down till the next moon phase.
The trout are up on the flats also but the majority of them are in the two-foot or deeper range. They are eating pumpkinseed slam’Rs and pigfish. The ladyfish and jacks may intersect your bait before the trout can get to it. The tarpon are still in the Indian River and are eating mullet fished freeline or dead on the bottom.
Further north in the river there are a lot of mangrove snapper being caught. Fish the edge of the channel with a pilchard or small finger mullet. I have been using Stren floralcarbon line for that extra sensative bite. When the fish breath on your bait you can feel them there. I have also taken some lane snapper along with the mangrove.
Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
