Ponce Inlet to Mosquito Lagoon

Capt. Joe Porcelli
August 27, 2000
Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well August is here and you can finally feel the heat to prove it, we have had a little breeze through August and it has been mild. Not only the temperature is hot but also the fishing can be just as hot. This past week we took tailing reds on the flats in the Mosquito Lagoon. Steak out for the best results, this is going to be the thing to do in the near future. The fish are spooky now with all the traffic running them they are getting hard to approach. Staking out in a place reds travel or near a school will bring you the best results. Lead the fish by casting way ahead for reds that are spooky.

The lagoon is holding a lot of other fish like tarpon, jacks, ladyfish, pompano, trout, mangrove snapper, black drum, snook and an occasional grouper if your fishing for them. Trout and reds are your best target but if you are targeting other species you can catch them with a little skill and patience.

Tarpon are all through the Indian River and even in the lagoon now. The best shot to catch one is in the north end on the out going tide. Soak some finger mullet or cast ahead of the fish you see roll. You can use plugs or Twelve Fathom 4’’ shad bodies in the chartreuse tiger color. For best hook up ratio use a circle hook laced through the shad just in front of the eyes. The hook gives you enough weight to cast and just enough weight for a slow descend.

Remember: Think like a fish to catch fish.
