Mosquito Lagoon - Saltwater Fishing Report

There is more bait in the lagoon than I have ever seen. This is good in one way and bad in another. The redfish and trout are thick but just after the full moon the fishing slows because of the night feed. This past week Chris Everett and Mike Anderson fished with me and they took nine reds on Johnson Silver Minnow spoons. Mike caught his first tripletail and some ladyfish as well. The ladyfish are thick along with some jacks and bluefish under the bait schools. For the ladyfish wind fast and the trout bounce your jig. Chris Everett brought his dad out (Lonnie Everett) a few days later for some red hot action and they caught nine reds that day. Most of them were big fish and we had to sight cast to a few slot fish to get a few small enough to keep. Chris also sight cast to a three pound trout with a Gulp Shrimp to finish the day. The Mosquito lagoon flats have many pin fish and pigfish on they so getting your reds to eat is going to be up to the fish being hungry. Your moon phase is the key in the lagoon to when the fish will bite. Time your best fishing spot with the moon and you should do well. You will know when this is because the mullet will be jumping like crazy at the prime time. Better yet look it up before you go, then you can get to that best spot just before it turns on. Now north of the lagoon you have tide dependent fish and they feed more on the tides.

You will see big trout on the edges of the flats cruising looking for a snack. You can toss a live shrimp or Gulp Shrimp at them. Gulp will work better because they will not get ripped apart by the pin fish. Pigfish (for bait) are just getting to a better size it seems everything is running a month late this year. Ed Sabatini brought his son Justin who was visiting from Texas to fish the lagoon with me. They caught nine reds as well, with only one that was small enough for the slot. They took a nice trout and Justin caught his first tripletail. The water level is low so go slow if you don't know where you going or have a boat that should not be running the flats. Charles Liska Joe and Tony fished the flats on a 3/4 day and they took seven reds two nice trout (many short trout) and ladyfish. I will post an offshore report on the Daytona Beach report. Remember think like a fish to catch fish or just call me I will guarantee you do.
