December is a prime month for quality reds in Pine Island Sound

Jennifer Wolter

Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

With water temperatures cooling as Winter quickly approaches, we have been having success targeting trout and redfish in shallow water. November and December are prime months for big reds on the flats, especially for anglers who prefer using artificial lures and flies. On calm mornings, we've been throwing flies in shrimp and crab patterns at tailing redfish. A redfishes favorite method of feeding is head down, nose in the grass as it roots around for crustaceans, crabs and shrimp, and baitfish. We've been encountering a few singles and pods but usually only when the water is slicked out on calm mornings. Pay close attention to the tides to catch some of the best sight fishing of the year. Usually the last part of the outgoing tide and the first part of the incoming are when you're most likely to find redfish tailing.

As the water levels rise, redfish will move out of the cuts and channels and up onto the flats to feed.Just a couple feet of water can hold some impressive numbers of redfish. Lately we've been catching a lot of good sized fish in the 26-29" range on topwaters and plastics staked out in 2" of water. If you can position your kayak just right, you can have redfish coming right towards you. Fishing doesn't get much better than this!
