Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's hard to believe that the year is wrapping up! 2013 was a fantastic year to fish the inshore waters of Naples and Marco Island with many memorable trips with great clients and some great catches. December has wrapped up with more of the same.
Pompano were my main focus last week as they finally made a strong showing in the back country channels and cuts. Usually we find them active in early to mid-November, however warmer water temperatures delayed the run this year.
My favorite method to target these tasty scrappers is casting a 1/4 ounce jig. A local favorite is the surgical tube jig. Buck tails work well also. Tipping with a small piece of shrimp tail give a bit of advantage.
Moving water is key to success as the pompano work deeper channels adjacent to flats or cuts between areas of shallow water. Cast across current and bump the jig along the bottom keeping the line tight.
Sea Trout have also been showing in good numbers in many of the same areas as the pompano. Live sardines, shrimp and jigs are all taking fish.

With the unseasonably warm water temperatures, we had some fantastic snook fishing especially just before Christmas when the tides were strong. Using live sardines, several trips boated as many as 20 snook on half day trips with several fish ranging to 30 inches. Some slot redfish were in the mix as well as plenty of jumbo jack crevalle giving us a work out.
I am looking forward to a promising new year on the water! Happy New Year!
