Excellent Week of Fishing

Capt. Chris McCubbin
April 9, 2008
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

I have fished everyday this month so far and have really been doing well. Bait has been deeper and on the wrecks. Best bet is before the sun comes up to high or late afternoon. I like the pilchards, but if you like threads than it doesnt matter when you go they are everywhere.

Snook have been my main targets still and I had a huge week. I averaged around 25 fish per trip with most fish in the 24 inch range. Fishing docks and rock walls has been good for me, so I haven't fished the bushes or mangroves lately. Mixed in with the snook are big jacks and some nice mangrove snapper to 16in. I did have a young girl jump about a 80lb. tarpon while snook fishing and have been seeing a good amount of them in the passes.

I did manage a few days offshore this week and the kingfish bite is off and on. Permit are beginning to show on some of the wrecks. Small pass crabs fished on a small cork or with a little split shot works well for me. Cobia are also on the wrecks, so keep a livebait ready or have a rod rigged with a Berkley Power Eel ready to pitch at them.

I'm attaching a few pictures of a good client Bill Jonathan who had a monster two days of fishing. Yesterday he caught a huge snook weighing in at around 35lbs, it bottomed out the 30lb Boga. The big girl ate a live pilchard fished on 15lb PowerPro. Also pictured is a huge cobia caught this afternoon while permit fishing. She ate a live crab freelined on 30lb PowerPro.

Naples Fishing Forecast:

Fishing should remain good as long as this weekends front doesn't get to cold. Water temps are perfect and big fish are in the area. Start looking for big schools of tarpon to be showing up.

Target Species:

Snook, Tarpon, Permti
