Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

We're settled into September now and temperatures have cooled slightly compared to the blazing heat of last month. With water temperatures also cooling a bit, the fishing action in the backwaters has really turned on!
We are continuing to catch plenty of redfish on most trips with most of the fish in the back bays running 22 to 26 inches. Higher tide stages are bringing most of the action. Scaled sardines have been taking plenty of fish as usual, but Berkley's Gulp shrimp in a molting color rigged on a jig head will also get plenty of action. Closer to the gulf beaches and passes, there are some larger redfish ranging to the 20 lb. mark. Live and cut baits rigged with enough weight to get them near the bottom are the preferred offering.
Snook fishing has perked up with loads of small snook just about anywhere the current is running. I have been targeting up tide sides of mangrove points in the back bays and getting plenty of action. 20 to 30 fish a trip are the norm. Friday morning, we hooked into three fish in the 15 lb. range using live sardines.
The big tarpon should begin to make an appearance as schools of mullet and other bait fish start to make their annual fall migration in the next few weeks.
