Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Although the weatherman promises rainy season is right around the corner, the summer heat is on here in SW Florida. Despite the lack of relief from rain, fishing has been on the hot side the last week as well. Anglers simply need to be willing to get an early start or head out in the evening to enjoy some great inshore action around Naples.
I have been fishing with clients daily and we are finding good numbers of snook with some of the fish pushing near 20 lbs. Most are taking live baits, but we have been having success with plastic swim baits and flies as well. In the mornings, there has been a noticable slow down with the bite by 10:00 am. The fish seem to shut down mid day and then feed heavily again near sunset.
I fished with Jim McCann a few days ago and he boated this 18 lber on light tackle from under the mangroves...

We are still catching some nice redfish along the back country shorelines. Still not schooled up, but they are nice slot fish when you find them. Here is Elizabeth Rounding with a nice one caught and released yesterday...

She and her husband Tyler found plenty of snook and big jack crevalle to bend the rods all morning long.
There are plenty of big bull and lemon sharks all over the back bays willing to give anglers a workout anytime. While my clients have not been targeting tarpon, there are a few fish being hooked locally especially at sunrise and sunset. All one has to do is commit the time. Strong tides for the next week with the full moon should keep the action going.
