Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report
The weather hot with added heat and oh my what humidity. This is perfect for the Snook and Tarpon Fishing. The only thing that would be nice is a little more afternoon rains to cool things off and to get some freshwater moving in the back country. This would help with the baby Tarpon. Oh yeah and did I mention it was hot with a touch of mosquito.
This months fishing has been good I would not say great because I have seen better June fishing especially for the outside Tarpon and small Tarpon on the inside. The outside fish are there but we have had some winds to contend with this June, mind you not every day but enough to make things difficult. Our Normal East pattern for the mornings has not been the norm we have had many mornings with South West and North West Breezes. This makes it much more difficult to fish those outside fish especially on Fly. Bait fisherman are doing just fine. Jumping plenty along the beaches and on the shoals near the passes. Snook fishing has been very good both on Fly and bait. If the Tarpon action does not materialize then the Snook fishing seems to make up for it. All the passes and beaches leading to passes and inside bays leading to passes are just choked with them. Fishing along Hurricane today I must of counted a few thousand fish. It was a never ending procession of two's through twenties. Tide was a little slow but we had about 12 hookups on Fly. Surprisingly enough, there was a few Reds mixed in with the schools of Snook. No hookups but most of the reds we saw were well over the slot. After we finished sight fishing to Snook we moved to the Back Country for baby Tarpon. Plenty available. Only landed one about 20 Lbs, nice fish, but had plenty of close calls on others. I am not taking them out of the water if you want a picture take it in the water. The water is hot and the fish are really tired when landed. Just Take the hook out of them and let them back quickly so as not to stress them too much. I did see two schools of oversized reds in the Back bays which is highly unusual. They were oversized fish and about twenty to thirty in each School. This I have never seen this time of the year and in the area we were in especially. For food conscious anglers the Snapper fishing inshore and offshore has been excellent. We are catching nice fish on artificial, fly, and bait in and around the passes on the inside and offshore on the near shore wrecks. Near shore wrecks are also producing some sporadic Permit catches.

What should we suspect for the rest of June and into July. I expect continued off the Hook Snook Fishing. Tarpon to beat the ban especially if we start getting steady rain. July one of our hottest months and also one of the best for small Tarpon. Rain equals great Tarpon Fishing in the Back country. In July you will see a greater decrease of fishing pressure and more fish being caught per angler hour. If you venture out you want to beat the heat. I like to start fishing by 6 am and off by 11 am back out at 6 pm and off at 9 pm. This usually gets you out after the afternoon thunder storms. Oh yeah bring the bug spray July can be a little buggy. Went into the trails off of 41 Yesterday and used a Thermo cell for the first time worked pretty well keeping the little nasties away. Recommend it. Short and sweet for the rest of June and July everything will be biting including the bugs. Good Luck and Good Fishing Capt. Roan z.
