Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

January is flying by and I am still concentrating mainly on the schools of redfish although there is as some real decent trout fishing to be had also. I have also found a few snook showing up in some of the bays far inland.

Believe it or not the best fishing I have found is for a few days after one of the numerous cold fronts go through. With the high barometer, the tides tend to run lower than normal concentrating fish in the deeper runs and sloughs in the backcountry. This is exaggerated even more when accompanying a full or new moon phase. My anglers are enjoying non-stop action on a variety of fish when these conditions come together.

One recent trip, on one of the coldest days of the month, We boated nearly 50 redfish to 7 lbs; sheephead running to 4 lbs along with flounder, trout, whiting and small snook. We took fish on 3" molting gulp shrimp on 1/4 oz. jig heads as well as cut shrimp on the same head.

I fished a trip yesterday afternoon 12/22 as a strong front came through. Starting out with calm winds and comfortable temperatures, we ended up with winds to 30 knots, rain and about a 20 degree drop in temperature. The guys managed 22 reds, sheepshead and a few trout before we cut it short as they were in shorts and not prepared for that weather!

Target Species:

Redfish, Seatrout
