Naples and Marco Fishing Report and Happy Thanksgiving.

Capt. Roan zumFelde
November 29, 2009
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

First things first, I hope all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and food and fun and family was plentiful and joyful. Now what everyone wants to know about, Fishing. The last two weeks of November was red hot and not just the weather. Warm weather and warm Gulf Temps let us catch some great fish the last couple of weeks, including False Albacore, Snook, Tarpon, and even some late season Peacock Bass on the freshwater scene. Unfortunately December looks like things might slow up a little with a nasty little front that passed through. If it stays cool fishing will cool a little. If we have a warm comeback then December should follow about the same as November.

The last couple of weeks of November were just about a blur for me. So many species to catch and so little time to do it in. Fly fishing for False Albacore or another name is Little Tunney, was a blast. We caught them on small Gummy Minnows on eight and nine weight Fly Rods. Great fun on the long rod. They also blasted artificial in the may lay schools, that were right off the beaches. Snook fishing was excellent also. Found fish in all the usual places along with some way in the back country of the Everglades. Small Tarpon were hit and miss in the creeks and even out front. Night fishing for both Snook and Tarpon was excellent in The Marco River and around Isle of Capri. Last but not least something we do not talk much about Peacock Bass fishing was very good in the Golden Gate Canal System. We caught most all the fish on Fly in fact a couple of guys saw us catching them and wondered why they weren't. We showed them how small the flies were that they were taking and they were going to come back the next day with a Fly Rod. Anyhow to make a long story short Fishing was excellent.

Naples Fishing Forecast:

Now what is going to happen in December?

It is not starting well. Cold Front and all the wind has hurt us a little. The good news is that It will not be lasting long, I hope. It seems as if we are going to get back into good fishing again. The only hitch water temps have shot down and this might screw some things up for a little while. I do not think it will last long, long range forecasts are for warming trends again and if that holds true we should still have great December fishing. Couple items to note for December. Snook season is closed again along with Trout. I am sure we will be catching keepers left and right now that it is closed. I would expect to see more fish showing up on the inside this month and a little less on the outside. Snook fishing under the lights will still be good all month and probably your best success. Tarpon will still be showing up here and there. Especially in areas close to deep water. Other species like Pompano and Ladyfish and Trout will become more prevalent as the waters continue to cool. Redfish, well your guess is as good as mine. Hard to find so far here one day gone tomorrow. Maybe they will make a surge in December I hope so. On the freshwater scene expect things to go down hill from here until spring. Colder water will turn off the Peacocks and put a lull in the Largemouth populations. Still catchable but not as plentiful as before. Offshore Kingfish will be good this month.

Target Species:
