Naples report chilly bite

Capt. Pete Root
February 23, 2009
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

The backwater bite in Naples this past week has been just about as cold as the water. Water temperatures in the mid to upper sixties have had a lock jaw effect on the snook it seems until later in the day when the temperatures rise right around 70. To rectify this I have been using the smaller white bait and shrimp to target Speckled Sea Trout that have been feeding over most of the larger grass beds. Along with the trout have been good sized keeper Pompano. Orange jig heads with a short surgical tube tail have been responsible for most of the Pompano. Of course, as I drift the flats the lady fish seem to be every where the trout are not. To finish off the mornings I have been targeting a few proven docks for sheep head and snapper to change things up. The bigger green back herring that I netted before the trip have been being chewed on by snook and jacks in the afternoon.
Yesterdays charter wanted to take home dinner. Although we had to wait the better part of the morning for the tide to be right before we could venture onto a mud flat. It paid off, They went home with a 24 inch redfish for the grill.
tight lines
