250 Pounds of Grouper

Capt. Michael Avinon
August 23, 2011
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

I ran a half day yesterday and we starterd our morning putting a couple of groupers up to 24" in the box for dinner. We kept two for dinner and released another 30 to 35 undersized groupers along with 4 more keeper sized fish we released. After a couple hours of catch and release we decided to try our luck for a goliath grouper.I ran about four miles to a wreck were we usually do well. After about twenty minutes we got a bite and it was game on.After a 25 minute battle on 50 pd test we finally got the fish to the surface. The goliath was an easy 250 to 300 pds.Not bad at all for 50pd test.

Naples Fishing Forecast:

The red grouper fishing remains to be fantastic with limits of twelve fish coming easy on the full day and 3 to 6 keepers the norm on the half day.If you have ever thought about pulling on a fish that will stretch your arms and back, now is prime time to pull on goliath grouper. The warm water has them feeding all day long and on some full day spots you simply cant get away from them.Gag grouper opens on Sept.16 until Nov 15 and right now there is talk of a fall red snapper season with limits of red snapper going to 4 per person.September has always been a good cobia month right around the full moon.
