Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

I'm sorry to report that the great fishing we enjoyed early last week took a little turn as red tide made its way into the inland waters of Naples and Marco Island late last week. This concentrated algae bloom is responsible for fish kills and low oxygen levels when it is found in these concentrations. Needless to say it has slowed the action way down for at least the short term.
That doesn't mean people should not get out and enjoy the amazing weather we are having and give the fishing a shot though. I continue to be hard at it everyday and while working hard for the bites, my anglers are being rewarded with a few really nice fish.
Redfish are the main target right now, and are running from 23 to 26 inches. During low tide I am concentrating on shallow edges of the channels and sight fishing for cruising, feeding fish in water less than a foot deep. Yesterday morning (Monday) produces several nice fish caught on live shrimp and jigs. We kept two fish for dinner and as I filleted them, found that they were just gorged with tiny glass minnows! A sign that these fish are not being affected by the red tide.
With the new moon a couple nights ago, we are experiencing very high water in the afternoon. This pushes the redfish way up under the mangrove cover. Anglers who consistently get their baits into the tight pockets are being rewarded with a few nice reds also.
Other targets right now include large sheepshead which are spawning in the area passes and along beaches right now. They are being caught as big as five pounds. A piece of shrimp with just enough weight to get on the bottom is the bait of choice.
Trout and pompano have not been cooperating for me the last few days. I would guess that as soon as the water quality improves, they will be back on the scene.

Naples Fishing Forecast:

Hopefully the red tide will be a short term event. We should start to see more snook activity and large trout making an appearance by the end of the month.
