Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

August 21, 2012
I fished with clients most mornings in the last week and finally found some good schools of redfish in the back waters. Most of the fish have been in the 20 to 24 inch range, with a few topping out at 30 inches.
The pilchards along area beaches have remained abundant and have accounted for most of the red fish caught. The incoming tides and first of the fall have been best.
Friday morning, I fished with local Jim McCann. We managed to dodge the numerous coastal storms that were moving through. Fishing mainly in Rookery and Johnson Bays, Jim and I kept lines tight all morning releasing countless redfish and snook. Jim's largest red was this 30 inch, 10 pounder...

Yesterday (Monday) morning, I fished one of my popular specialty shark trips with Rob Walker and his sons Daniel (10) and Johnny (12). Lines weren't in long before Danny was warming up with a 3 foot lemon shark. Shortly after release, Danny's bait got picked up again. This time it was obvious that it was a much larger shark. After a one hour tug-of-war, young Danny finally had a 7 1/2 foot lemon shark to the boat! It was all Rob and I could handle sliding this beast onto the deck for some quick photos.
A short time later, Johnny was hooked up. This time, the shark blazed at least 300 yards of line off the reel! We gave chase and again after an hour fight, Johnny had an equal sized lemon shark to the boat! Two huge fish for two committed young anglers. Way to go boys!
Here is Danny putting all he has left into the fight...
