Naples & Marco Island, FL

Capt. Roan zumFelde

Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing this week has been back to the same old ho hum Snook, Tarpon, and Snapper on just about every cast. Oh that is a good thing! No excuses get out and catch some fish.

This week fishing has been very good, catching nice Snook on the Fly and starting to get a few Tarpon again. The best fishing times have been early morning or late afternoon which is usually the case this time of the year. The Snook fishing really tapers off after ten o’clock and then will pick up about two hours before dark, just about the time the No Seeums start to come out. The other shinning star literally is the night fishing for Snook and Tarpon. The lights from Marco to Naples have been on fire with large Snook and Tarpon up to 40 lbs. The tide doesn’t seem to matter as long as it is moving one way or the other.

Red fishing has been slow but that is not unusual for this time of the year. I say slow, that doesn’t mean impossible, we have been getting some shots just about every time we go out. Most of the fish I have been finding in the bays closer to the inside creeks. If we keep getting rain more and more Tarpon will be showing up, I have jumped one or two on every trip this last week and I expect it to get better as the summer progresses and we receive more rain.

Now for you bait fisherman, the white bait is starting to arrive on the beaches and the small white bait is getting big enough to fish with also. It took me all of 5 minutes to fill the live well the other day with plenty to use and all the bait I needed to chum with. We caught Snook, Snapper till we were just plain tired of fishing yesterday. We took home a limit of 12 inch Snapper and caught as many Snook as we wanted to on just about every point we fished on or near the passes. The only thing was we caught large numbers of Snook that were under legal and very few legal ones. I think the larger fish are finishing the spawn and moving again either up the rivers or back out to the reefs. Speaking of the reefs the late evening and the nightime Snapper fishing has been excellent on all the nearshore reefs and wrecks. If you get to the reefs before dark make sure and flip a crab out for a permit, they have been around also.
