Naples & Marco Island, FL

Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cold Weather, from record highs to record lows. What does this mean for our fishery? Big trouble but there is a small glimmer of hope. I think most of our gamefish survived the attack of the Cold.

The Naples and Marco Report for Monday January the 7th After fishing last week on the tail end of some of the worst cold weather I have seen to hit South Florida in 15 years. At first the report was a pretty bleak one. Most of the creeks I traveled into were holding fish just most of the fish were dead. Many juvenile Tarpon, Snook, Snapper, Goliath Grouper and Sand Bream were littering the bottom. I thought oh my god the fishing is over. But I was wrong. We took a big hit but we are not out for the count. Yesterday fishing The CCA Redfish Tourney out of Goodland we fished back toward Naples My partner Ritch and I caught some beautiful Redfish and some actually a couple of good sized Snook that made it through the cold temps. Congrats to all 28 teams who entered, I believe a record high boats for this tourney and congrats to all the winners. There were a lot of great fisherman in this one and we were very fortunate to come out of it with a second place. Back to the Fishing report. In the last couple of days of fishing I have seen more reds in the area then ever before, just about every bay from Naples to Marco are holding them. If you find some oyster areas adjacent to points leading into deeper water this is were the majority of them are. This is sight fishing at its best in Naples. There are even some nice Snook and Seatrout mixed into the massive amounts of Redfish.

I believe we will see a continued recovery for the Snook in our area. It looks to me that most of the Snook were in areas were it didn’t super cool and that they survived the low tides and the extreme low temps. With the weather again heating up next week I believe we will be back in business. If you just want to catch fish get out and find some reds they are a little spooky but a well placed cast and a slow retrieve was the ticket for us on Sunday.
